Being a "First-Generation Scholar" means that my parents did not go to college or university. My First-Gen background influences the initiatives I am involved in now - mentoring and advocating for students. Specifically, providing resources to under-represented students. Breaking barriers and glass ceilings. Raising awareness for increased visibility and accessibility in STEM, whilst addressing diversity equity and inclusivity.
In my work remit, I get a lot of requests for in-depth advice on personal and professional development! The following topics are what I can support you with. I will be keen to offer short form answers via email, of course! However, if you need more time or a personalised mentoring service, please feel free to request from the following.

STEM Journey Blog

@ph.studies on Instagram

I have a strong interest in being a part of widening participation outreach STEM activities. My knowledge of the university academic environment developed by attending widening participation programmes. My communication skills and confidence developed through speaking with researchers as I learn about their successes and challenges on social media or in-person. I have the motivation to increase visibility in science and empower others to explore STEM on my Instagram page, where I document my STEM journey!

Supporting Doctoral Researchers

Representing researchers within the School of AACME at Loughborough University

I am a volunteer in the Doctoral Researcher Representative Team. We collaborate and plan a series of events that have a positive impact on the researchers' experience. E.g. the creation and hosting of 'Balance'. A 10 week course in mindfulness that gives researchers 15 minutes a week for mental health recharge.
The team was recognised and nominated for a Team of the Year Award at the University's PhD Award 2022 Ceremony! My contribution within the reps team made me become shortlisted for an Outstanding Impact Award in my first year at Loughborough University.

'Placement like a pro' Career Coaching Book

Helpful resources published by students for students!

I worked in a team with other students who have been on a placement to promote and support placement-related events during lockdown. As a result, my colleagues and I produced a careers podcast. Also, a specific Lifesciences placement booklet was planned and written by me. All these resources have been made accessible to students at the University by integrating them in the University's online 'Canvas' system.
This co-creation project was recognised and a 'Supporting Student/Graduate Employability' National Award was given by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, Awards for Excellence!

About me

Antibacterial Coatings Doctoral Researcher | University Teacher | Science Communicator | Sub-warden

I am an enthusiastic materials engineering PhD researcher, passionate about applied research and product development, project work and consumer innovation. My interests and ambitions are focused on helping to improve people’s lives!
With the experience of working in a consumer healthcare environment during an extended fifteen-month industrial placement at GlaxoSmithKline (now Haleon), I enjoyed rapid progression to become a Product Chemistry Scientist after my first role as a New Product Development Scientist.
I received an Integrated MChem Degree from University of Sussex in 2021. My dissertation work focused on nanoscience’s application in waste-water treatment.
Sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, I am currently developing more efficient and environmentally friendly antibacterial coatings in the Martin-Fabiani Group. My co-supervisors are Elisa Mele and Tao Sun. The PhD studentship allows me to expand my skills beyond my MChem degree as I learn about soft matter, microbiology, and materials science.
My strong work ethic and high motivation enable me to take pride in my work, achieve milestones on time, and meet high-quality standards, collaboratively or as an individual when required.
I also enjoy mentoring others; supporting them in their work and development. My hobbies include recreational ice skating, drawing and cooking.
